Increase locally grown food production by getting fruit, herb and vegetable plants into the hands of consumers to grow their own fresh foods. Along with providing farmers the opportunity to sell transplants to local consumers.

It is important that a municipal representative is committed to promoting and/or establishing a spring plant sale. Leadership and support can come from the Green Team, Parks and Recreation representatives, local Master Gardeners, Federated Garden Clubs, 4-H representatives, University of Nebraska Agriculture Extension Offices, Regional Audubon Society and local volunteers. This does not have to be a municipal government led action. Any organization or volunteer may lead this action.

  • You’ll need staff or volunteers to organize sale

  • Costs can be minimal and can be offset by charging vendors a nominal fee. Much publicity can be done electronically via websites, social media, listservs and through in kind contributions.


Playbook Steps

  1. Conduct a Spring/Fall Transplant Sale

  2. OR: Confirm the need for a Spring/Fall Transplant Sale.

  3. Select and reserve a suitable location. Easily accessible location, ample parking. Could possibly be held in conjunction with an existing Farmers market.

  4. Contact potential vendors/farmers.

  5. Contact local Master Gardeners, Garden Clubs, 4-H representatives.

  6. Determine the best time for sale depending on your frost dates.

  7. Post announcements to your municipality’s website. Utilize social media (Facebook, twitter, YouTube and Flickr), local newspapers, listservs. Post notices in municipal buildings, libraries, schools. E-mail to all municipal employees. Advertise on local access cable channel and local radio if available.
